Christophe Malaterre

I teach and do research in philosophy of science and philosophy of biology at UQAM (Montréal, Canada) where I am also Canada Research Chair in Philosophy of the Life Sciences. My interests include questions on reductionism, emergence, explanation and (downward) causation, especially in the context of biological (hence complex) systems. I am particularly interested in the "gap" that parts living from non-living matter, hence my current work on the notion of chemical evolution and its articulation with biological evolution (natural selection). I also investigate the pervasive explanatory role of "evolution" across sciences (from chemical to social sciences).  I have a PhD in philosophy at the Université Paris 1 - Panthéon Sorbonne (France), and a scientific education from Ecole Centrale de Paris (France) and MIT (USA).
