In this article, we analyse Maurice Duplessis’ government’s representation of universities from 1936 to 1959. Specifically, we argue that the Unionists conceived universities as both important elements in the dissemination of Franco-Catholic culture and as vital tools for economic development. Indeed, since a significant part of the Union Nationale’s economic model was based on natural resources, Duplessis and his ministers sought to link universities to geological, hydraulic and forestry resources.
