Public participation in participatory science initiatives is approached by questioning the forms and figures of citizen engagement. Based on a synthesis of empirical work, we propose a typology of six figures in order to understand what engages citizens and what these forms of engagement reveal about the relationship between scientists and non-scientists and more broadly, about the relationship between science and society. Consideration of plural forms of engagement allows us to move beyond the categorizations commonly used to characterize modes of participation and to shed light on the diversity of participatory science activities.
